Who We Are
Hanshaw Kennedy Hafen was founded in Frisco in 2004 by two litigators with a simple goal: win cases for clients who cannot afford to lose them. Two decades later, the firm has grown to ten attorneys handling business law, commercial litigation, healthcare law, estate planning, and family law across the DFW area.
Most of our clients come from referrals. That is not an accident. We work to understand what each client actually needs, we communicate directly, and we get things done. If you are looking for a firm that treats you like a partner rather than a file number, you have found it.
Business
Contracts, entity formation, acquisitions, and business disputes across Collin, Denton, and Dallas Counties. We have handled business law matters at every stage of a company’s growth since 2004.
Catastrophic Injury
Serious injuries change everything. We build cases that reflect the full scope of what our clients have lost and fight to make sure it is recognized.
Employment Contracts
We draft, review, and negotiate employment agreements, including non-compete and non-disclosure provisions, for employers and employees throughout North Texas.
Estate Planning
Wills, trusts, and the plans behind them. We help clients protect what they have built and make sure it passes the way they intend.
Family
Divorce, custody, support, and modification cases are handled with the kind of steady, experienced representation that makes a real difference when it matters most.
Healthcare
Regulatory compliance, disputes, and contract work for healthcare providers who need legal counsel that understands their industry.
Litigation
Commercial disputes, breach of contract, fraud, partnership conflicts, and more. Our trial lawyers have handled complex business litigation across Texas courts and federal venues for over 20 years.
Non-Compete Contracts
Whether you are drafting one, enforcing one, or fighting one, our attorneys know non-compete law in Texas and how courts here evaluate these agreements.
OSHA
We guide businesses through OSHA compliance, investigations, and enforcement actions, helping employers reduce risk before and after an incident.
Partnership Disputes
When business relationships break down, the legal and financial stakes are high. We represent partners on both sides of these disputes in negotiations, mediation, and court.

How are retainers managed?
Our firm establishes retainer agreements with clients for each matter requiring counsel. The retainer agreement details the terms of our relationship, including the retainer amount, hourly rates, billing schedule, document retention, and scope of work. We begin work on a case upon receiving the signed agreement and retainer payment.
Each month, we provide clients with detailed invoices, which include the date, timekeeper, time spent, and description of legal services provided, along with any expenses covered on behalf of the client. Retainer funds are applied to the invoice balance, with any remaining amount due immediately. Invoices are emailed directly, and if the retainer balance drops below a certain level, we may request additional funds via email.
Certain matters, such as entity formation and estate planning, may be billed on a flat-fee basis, as agreed upon by both parties. Any contingency fee arrangements must be approved by the firm’s managing partner.
How is information confidentiality handled?
Our firm adheres to Texas law, which protects all communications between a lawyer and a potential client made for the purpose of obtaining legal advice, even if the attorney is not formally retained. For instance, any information shared during a consultation with our attorneys is safeguarded under attorney-client privilege. Open communication with your attorney is vital to ensure effective representation and allow you to fully benefit from the legal system.
As a standard practice, our attorneys may share information about your case with other firm attorneys or staff as necessary to support your matter, unless you instruct us otherwise.

Rare Jury Trial in Child Custody Case
I was sued by a family member over a contract dispute involving our respective business interests. Suffice it to say, it was a delicate situation that was emotionally charged and extremely stressful. I handed the problem over to Hastings Hanshaw and within 3 months the case was dismissed and the other side had to reimburse me for all of my attorney’s fees. A truly spectacular result.
(Business Litigation)
We have used Hanshaw Kennedy for all of our corporate legal needs and have been very pleased with their services. We consider them a key business partner and recommend them every chance we get!
